Karen Douglas appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia

March 13, 2019

All of us at Harper Grey are very proud to congratulate Karen Douglas on her recent appointment as a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Madam Justice Douglas began her career with Harper Grey in 1997 and practiced as a civil litigator with our firm for over 20 years.  Her practice focused on health law and privacy law in both the litigation and administrative areas.  She advised medical professionals in a wide variety of matters and forums that arose from the intersection of the law and medical practice.  She also advised health care professionals and clinics regarding a wide variety of privacy breaches and helped with proactive strategies for protecting and managing breaches going forward.  Justice Douglas appeared at all levels of court in British Columbia and successfully responded to leave applications in the Supreme Court of Canada.

During her time with Harper Grey, Madam Justice Douglas was an inspiring role model paving the way for women to play a meaningful role in firm governance through being appointed to a number of leadership roles on various Harper Grey committees, including as Assistant Chair of the firm’s Health Law Group.  She was equally committed to supporting the larger legal community and actively participated in many different organizations and associations including the CBA.  She has been a sought after speaker on medical-legal issues and frequently presented to a wide audience including lawyers, students, physicians, residents, and allied health care professionals.

Jonathan Meadows, Harper Grey’s Managing Partner, addressed the appointment, saying, “One of the strengths Karen brought to her practice was the calm and considered manner she maintained while assisting her clients in navigating the often stressful terrain of litigation.  Her compassion and empathy were underpinned by her wealth of experience and ability to be tough for her clients when needed.  On behalf of the firm, we would like to thank Justice Douglas for her years of tireless service.  We congratulate her and wish her a most rewarding experience on the bench.”
