Celebrating Gender Equality Week and spreading awareness!
In support of International Equal Pay Day held annually on September 18, our Diversity, Inclusion, & Belonging Committee, hosted an online event for our entire firm to bring awareness to the gender wage gap.
Congratulations to Jemma Redmond, Kayla Barsby, Angelina Korotchenko, Meg Monteith, Emily Iaccino, and Jeff Pelletier for being the first to correctly answer all the questions in our Gender Pay Equality Quiz! All six winners received a copy of “Truth Be Told” by Beverly McLachlin. You can learn more about this book here.
For those who missed the event and are curious to know the facts, here is a summarized version of the quiz:
- According to Statistics Canada, in 2020 women earned an average of 0.89 cents per every dollar earned by men.
- According to the World Economic Forum, if trends continue, it take 136 years to close the economic gender gap worldwide.
- How can we eliminate the gender wage gap?
a) Eliminate barriers for women to enter high-wage occupations and careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
b) Address systemic discrimination, particularly in male-dominated fields
c) Advocate for improved workplace policies (childcare, family leave, etc.)
d) Recognize and challenge gender stereotypes that reinforce notions of “appropriate” work for men and women
