Barbara Norell, QC appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia

March 12, 2018

All of us at Harper Grey are very proud to congratulate Barbara Norell, QC on her recent appointment as a justice of the Supreme Court of British Columbia.

Beginning her career at Harper Grey as an articling student in 1985, Justice Norell practised as a civil litigator with our firm for over 30 years, first as general insurance defence counsel, including professional negligence of lawyers. In later years, she focused on health law and privacy law in both the litigation and administrative law areas.  In 2003, she earned her LL.M. in e-commerce from Osgoode Hall Law School.  She was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 2016.

Justice Norell has been a sought after and frequent speaker at continuing education seminars for the legal, medical and insurance professions. She is committed to increasing diversity and inclusion within the legal profession and has been an active mentor to other women both inside and outside our firm through the Women Lawyers Forum of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Bar Association. As our firm’s Chief Diversity Officer, she was a member of the Justicia project of the Law Society of British Columbia and of the Law Firm Diversity and Inclusion Network. In 2017, she received a Lexpert Zenith award celebrating women in law.

Richard Bereti, Harper Grey’s Managing Partner, addressed the appointment, saying, “On behalf of the firm we would like to thank Justice Norell for her years of tireless service. We congratulate her and wish her a most rewarding experience on the bench”.
