Harper Grey Collaborates with CHPCA in Development of Lawyers’ Toolkit for Advance Care Planning
November 25, 2019
On November 25, 2019, the Advance Care Planning (ACP) in Canada initiative, led by the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (“CHPCA”), released “Living Well, Planning Well: An Advance Care Planning Resource for Lawyers”: Resources to support the legal processes of Advance Care Planning (“ACP”) in Canada. Harper Grey lawyers, Kim Jakeman and Sandra Abley were excited to be invited to collaborate with Torkin Manes on the development of the content for the ACP Legal Toolkit and eagerly provided their practical advice and recommendations.
Every province and territory in Canada has laws to help protect the right to ACP and choose an SDM (Substitute Decision Maker) to speak on a person’s behalf if they cannot.
The ACP Legal Toolkit is designed to help lawyers and their clients go through the process of ACP. It can assist in lawyers making a significant difference in their clients’ lives by encouraging them to reflect on and discuss their wishes, choose appropriate substitute decision makers and alternates, and share their wishes with them and health care providers.
